Summary: republican period saw gradual evolution of roman military, full time, paid soldiers, changes to weaponry, introduction of legion, new training techniques. Praetorian guard: responsible for numerous assassinations of emperors, claudius (41-54 ce) set dangerous precedent of paying the praetorian guard to con rm his ascension to emperor. Military reforms: emperor gallienus (253-268 ce) introduced cavalry crops, was modelled on eastern (i. e. parthian) tactics. Theodosius i: 378-395 ce, dealt with goths by letting them settle in roman territory, enrolled them in army, (precedent for future invaders) Pac: [you had] granted the privileged status of fellow soldiers to the barbarian peoples who promised to give you voluntary service, both to remove from the frontier forces of dubious loyalty, and to add reinforcements to your army .
