She despises this and takes a lover, agamemnon"s cousin and enemy. She sets herself up as queen in argos, her male consort is subordinate to her. In the process she abandons her role as mother to orestes and electra. Agamemnon finally comes back she fawns over him and rolls out a red carpet for him. But to step on a red carpet is to be arrogant, hubristic, etc. , it will doom him. He steps on the carpet in the end. When agamemnon comes into the palace clytemnestra draws him a bath, when he steps out she wraps him in a net-like towel and hacks him to death with an axe. In aeschylus she is the one who kills her husband but in others it is her consort.
