Often ignored in favour of pompeii even though it"s better preserved: the second stories of buildings survive. One of the problems with herculaneum is that it"s under 20 30 feet of volcanic rock. Excavations began in 1709, 40 years before pompeii. Another modern city grew up around it and covered the remains. Villa of the papyri is buried under 80 feet of volcanic soil. Since herculaneum was covered by a mudslide before being hit by eruption, organic material still survives. Able to get some demographic info from the living statues of the catastrophe. Feb. 3, 1863 guiseppe fiorelli was the first to pour plaster into the body cavities of the victims. The realization that there were significant losses in these disasters. Not much demographic evidence: age, gender, etc. Dogs as pets, beware of dogs mosaics. Preserved for individuals killed early in the eruption, not for those killed later in the pyroclastic surges.
