How do the locations of civic features relate to the idea of a walled city: there is a civic and religious boundary around a city, all burials would be outside this boundary. What evidence can be found for the growth of the civic area: city grew and grave yards had to be placed further and further from the core. The eternal city rome in the imperial period. Early rome: core of the city is on the east bank of the tiber river, a reconstruction of early rome based on archaeological evidence on the palatine. The earliest settlements in rome were wooden huts on the palatine hill. This may be why emperors tended to build their homes here.
