BI110 Lecture Notes - Lecture 30: Adherens Junction, Cell Adhesion Molecule, Cadherin
34 views5 pages
Document Summary
What keeps cells organized into tissues: cell junctions, cell junctions physically connect one cell to the next and anchor cells to the extracellular matrix, recall: extracellular matrix a bunch of proteins secreted out of the cell. Cadherins & integrins: cadherins are transmembrane proteins that connect cells to other cells, cadherins bind only to another cadherin of the same type. Integrins are transmembrane proteins that bind to extracellular matrix proteins. Cell junctions: cadherins and integrins organize into cell junctions in the plasma membrane, allowing cells to adhere to one another. Integrins and cadherins not randomly dispersed throughout the membrane: organized in particular ways to provide specific functions. Hemidesmosomes: hemidesmosomes are a type of desmosome, in which integrins are the prominent cell adhesion molecules. Involve intermediate filaments and integrins: do not hold cells together, but holds cell to specialized form of the extracellular matrix, called the basal lamina. *motor proteins change shape in a way that moves another cell structure.
