BI110 Lecture Notes - Lecture 30: Electromagnetic Spectrum, Radiant Energy, Photon
Document Summary
Energy: the capacity to do work: can take the following forms. Sun is the ultimate source of energy on earth. Earth is located at an optimal distance from the sun to support life. Matter: occupies space and has mass: all tangible substances: energy is convertible; one form of energy can be converted into another. Visible light includes wavelengths that are detectable to the human eye. Sun sends all rays from the electromagnetic spectrum, toward earth, but only uv to near-infrared rays actually reach earth. Wavelengths of light are inversely proportional to the amount of energy within that length: i. e. shorter wavelength = higher energy; longer wavelength = lower energy. Light: electromagnetic radiation that humans can detect with their eyes; a wave of discrete particles called photons. To be used, light energy must be absorbed by molecules called. Photons of light have different wavelengths (therefore, different amounts of energy)
