W and z chromosomes in others (birds, lepidoterans). Other chromosomes are called: autozomes (non-sex chromosomes). Heterogametic sex has only one copy of each type of sex chromosomes. One copy of a recessive allele results in expression of the trait. Only one copy of x chromosome, so that is the one that is expressed. Eg. colour blindness is linked to x chromosomes so if that mutation is present in heterogametic x chromosome, it will be expressed, even though it is recessive. Homogametic sex have two copies of sex chromosomes. Regulatory process that ensures that males and females have equal amounts of x- In female mammals, inactivation of one x chromosome makes the dosage of x-linked genes the same as males. Random inactivation of either x chromosome during embryonic development.
