BI226 2009 Section 5: Gene regulation in bacteria and bacteriophages
• Cells regulate expression of their genes at the transcriptional, post-transcriptional,
translational, and post -translational levels.
• Many prokaryotic genes are organized in operons, a tandem array of genes that are
transcribed as a single mRNA. This organizatio n permits the coordinate d regulation of the
proteins encoded by genes in the operon.
• Interactions between tran scription factors and DNA se quence elements regulates
eukaryotic genes at the transcriptional level.
• Regulation at the transcriptional leve l is usually combined with regulation
beyond transcription to ultimate ly determine gene expression.
