Groups: two or more people who interact with one another such that each person influences and is influenced by each other person. A work group is a group that interacts primarily to share information and to make decisions to help each other perform within his or her area of responsibility. Reasons why people join groups: security: to reduce insecurity, and to have others for guidance, status: provides recognition, self-esteem: provides self-worth to individuals, affiliation: fulfills the human need to be with others. Stage 1: forming: figure out purpose, clarification of roles. Stage 2: storming: where conflicts usually occur, sorting out responsibilities, formal leader steps forward, how will tasks be delegated. Stage 3: norming: issues are resolved, consensus around purpose and goals, cohesiveness. Stage 4: performing: group is most creative and efficient, focus is on task-achievement. Reasons for regression: new members, new tasks.
