Personality: A Definition
-A relatively stable set of psychological characteristics that influences the way an individual
interacts with their environment and how they feel, think, and behave
-What factors influence personality development?
• Heredity
o We are born with a certain type of characteristics/certain DNA; some aspects
from our parents that we take on
o Studies of twins and siblings
• Environment and situational factors
o Where we’re raised affects how our personality develops
o The experiences that we have affects how our personality develops
-Why are we interested in personality for OB?
• HR and organizations study personality characteristics b/c they influence performance at
work
• Experiments found 171 distinct personality traits
The Big Five Personality Dimensions (O.C.E.A.N.)
-Extraversion: The quality of being confortable with relationships
• Extroverted: Talkative, assertive, likes to be social
• Introverted: Shy, doesn’t like to be social
-Neuroticism/Emotional Stability: The ability to handle stress
• High in neuroticism: Tend to get anxious/angry/depressed, emotional
• Low in neuroticism: Won’t show stress they’re under, cool, calm, collected, poised,
secure
-Agreeableness: The ability to get along with others
• High in agreeableness: Compromise, avoid conflict, team player, gentle, forgiving
• Low in agreeableness: Intolerant, uncooperative, suspicious
-Conscientiousness: The degree of felt responsibility and detail orientation
• High in conscientiousness: Well organized, thorough, methodical-ness
• Low in conscientiousness: Disorganized, lazy, poor attention to detail
-Openness to Experience: The ability to be flexible and open-minded
• Open to experience: Original, creative, comes up with ideas
• Not open to experience: Low in creativity, close-minded, not interested, low levels of
intellectual curiosity
