BU398 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Trade Association
Document Summary
Lecture 7: designing org. for uncertain environments (internal) All elements outside the boundary of the org. that have the potential to affect the org. Task environment: sectors with which the org. interacts directly and has an effect on the org. "s a(cid:271)ility to a(cid:272)hieve its goals. General environment: sectors that may not directly affect the daily operations of a firm but will indirectly influence it. Adding positions and departments: each sector in the external environment requires an employee or department to deal with it, as uncertainty increases, so does internal complexity. Buffering and boundary-spanning roles: link and coordinate an org. with key elements in the external environment. Differentiation and integration: org. departments become highly specialized to handle uncertainty in the external sector. Integration is the quality and collaboration among departments. Organic vs. mechanistic management: organic org. system, free-flowing, adaptive processes, decentralized decision-making, mechanistic org. system, rules and procedures, clear hierarchy of authority, centralized decision-making.
