A model of the communication process - overview. Communication the passing of information, exchange of ideas, or the process of establishing a commonness or oneness of thought between a sender and a receiver. For communication to occur, must be common thinking between parties and info passed around. Source person that has info to share with others. Encoding putting thoughts, ideas, or info into a symbolic form. Contains info or meaning the source intends to convey. Message content info and/or meaning contained in the message. Message structure/message design the way the message is constructed to deliver the info or intended meaning. How the communication travels from the source or sender to the receiver. Personal channels: direct interpersonal (face-to-face) contact with target individuals or groups, social channels (ex: friends, neighbours) are also personal channels, representing word-of-mouth communication. Nonpersonal channels: methods of communication that carry a message without interpersonal contact between sender/receiver, referred to as the mass media or mass communication.
