Victimology: a criminological discipline focused on the study of victims, looking at patterns of victimization theories and how the criminal justice system responds to that. Most canadians feel safe in their neighbourhoods after dark. Women are less likely to report feeling safe. Fear of crime is situational (there are certain places which are less safe than others) Victims of crime report lower levels of satisfaction with personal safety. Most victims know the accused, (no stranger danger) Acquaintance (37%: many times homicide is accompanied with alcohol. Man-bites-dog criterion: something strange (people enjoy this kind of stuff) Demographic factors of the victim and offender. Media picks out unique cases mainly with white victims, multiple victims, child victims, and female victims. Majority of self-reported incidents were non-violent: property offences account for 70% of incidents. Violent victimization was 118 per 1000 canadians: physical assault was highest reported violent crime, majority of victims reported only one violent incident.
