Categories of crime
- Violent crime, crime against the person like assault, robbery, cyberbullying, kidnapping,
harassment so where the person feels that their safety is in danger.
- Property crime includes breaking in eteig, adalis so if ou ek soeoe’s
property, also includes, frauds, identity theft, arson, destroy or remove vehicle number
- Other criminal code. Can include administrate offences so if you were on prohibition so
you violate the rule
- Federal statute like drug related activity
- Traffic criminal code violation when you are driving not regular traffic rules like driving a
red light. So dangerous driving is a violation of traffic criminal code, driving a vehicle
he ou do’t hae a liese, o when you fail to stop at the scene of the accident

Assault (legally) defined three levels
- Assault 1: intentional force or threat without consent
- Assault 2: presence of weapon bodily harm can be a knife or an object that can become
a weapon, more serious.
- Assault 3: aggravated; wounds, maims, disfigures or endangers life so if you need
medical help like stiches because of the assault that it is level 3 of assault
Sexual assault
- January 1983
- Major changes: rape, gender-neutral so women could not get charged for rape even
though women can commit rape, spousal is that a spouse should not get charged
because they are married.

o Sexual assault- Level 1: non-consensual for sexual purpose like kissing, touching,
oral sex, so minor and no injuries
o Sexual assault- level 2: weapon, bodily harm. If someone threatens someone
with a weapon and causes harm.
o Sexual assault- level 3: (aggravated) serious harm to the victim, is wounded
Characteristics
Level 1:
- Statistics: UCR (under reported crime report) and victimization surveys (GSS)
- Most common
- Victims tend to be younger, but can be any age
- Sentence: 10 years max
Level 2:
- Statistics
- Victims, tend to be younger adults under the age of 30
- Serious
- Sentence: 14 years max, more prison time if weapon is used
Level 3: (Aggravated sexual assault)
- Statistics. More reported because they have to get medical attention
- Sentence: life in prison
Legislation for child victims
- 1988 changes
- Sexual interference (s.151) 10 years. Sexual touching of a child without legal consent
which is 16
- Invitation to sexual touching (s.152) 10 years prohibits adults from inviting child to
sexual activity
- Sexual exploitation (s.153) 14 years. Prohibits a person in authorities are not be sexual
like teacher and student even if the person is over the age of consent.
- Incest (s, 155) 14 years. Not allowed to have sexual intercourse with any family member
Legislation for children (newer)
- Child pornography (s. 163.1) even having in procession on your computer max 10 yeas in
prison
- Luring a child (s.172.1). cannot communicate with young child that invites them to
sexual activity known as internet luring, 10 years
- Child prostitutions (s.286.1, 286.2, and 286.3). a’t use a hild to ake oe fo
sexual activities.
- Child sex tourism (S. 7(4.1)- 7(4.3)) illegal for any Canadians to go out and have sex with
a child like a person may be found not guilty in one country but in Canada they can get
charged
