Document Summary

When asked what makes people proud to be canadian many people have canada"s health care system at the top of their list. In the 1960"s canada"s government (provincial government) began introducing government run health insurance (also known as medicare). This triggered the decline of many private health insurance companies and private clinics/hospitals. 1948 the canada health act came out and stated that all provincial health plans must meet a certain standard of coverage. This also outlawed charging fees for medically-necessary services. That is the history of canada"s health care systems. Today, all canadians are provided with comprehensive health insurance starting at birth through public health plans. The provincial governments run most hospitals and clinics as well, with doctors and surgeons charging government directly for their services. With canada"s health care system being one of the most generous in the world, it is also extremely expensive to maintain.
