The creative cultural industries were industries like film, t. v. , theatre, etc. The economy these days is largely based on the manipulation of signs: things are sold on their sign value, sign value is a brand, the people who know how to manipulate these signs are very sought after. Steve jobs creative, comes up with new jobs: branding has become integral to the new economy. Cities that attract high tech workers have more creative workers. We need creative industries to kick-start our economy. Why don"t we develop culture in our city: make ourselves a creative city so we can attract the kind of people we need. Europe each year, would designate a city as its capital of culture: holding events around film, publishing, theatre, etc. Using culture as a tool to brand cities: i. e. building museums, attract foreign visitors. Culture and creativity are a good way of branding yourself. Neo-liberal strategy: using culture and creativity purely for economic means.
