CT227 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Ageism, Job Performance, Social Mobility
Document Summary
Negative stereotypes of aging start in children through: fairy tales. Avoidance: ex, forms of grouping of older people, retirement centres. Experiments show elders themselves prefer young over old: because of the compounded messages over time. Fears of debilitation which is associated with death leading to fear and anxiety: education intervention can have a huge effect on out-group bias. Lack of identity as a political group: ex, canadian retirement association, yet it is only effected to integrate the young, middle-aged, and the old together to eliminate the bias. Elders themselves as teachers and activists to reduce and eliminate ageism. Since the 1950"s attitudes toward older workers has incorporated negative stereotypes. When does old age begin: a lot have come from age discrimination law suits, a lot of employments changed their policies, harder to maintain workers as aging population moving forward. Gender and aging: overall, men and women in the workplace are seen equally in terms of attractiveness in all ages.
