CT227 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Elder Abuse, Ageism, Fourth Age
Document Summary
Morality and the body from capitalist pursuit of profit. The good health of the population was necessary for profit ideals. Over time, healthiness, has replaced godliness, as a measure of an individual"s self-discipline and goodness. The modern public health movement became the extension of government to regulate workers health. Mothers were also promoted as servants of society. Children were to display and practice proper hygiene and manners. Those individuals and families whose appearance lacked the image of good health were thought of as undisciplined and sinful. The science of epidemiology helped identify the problem populations of both the poor and working class immigrants. The failure of elderly people to demonstrate the self"s true beauty charged the aged with moral depravity and an underlying sentiment of disgust. Lack of self-discipline reveals an immoral, dirty person who requires extensive retraining. Thus, those who embrace risky lifestyles are often confronted with strong disapproval.
