most people think the iliad is about the trojan war, but it's actually about rage.
It's broadly about war, the trojan war.

aesthetics:
roughly divide literature into these four genres:
Lyric, epic, drama and tragedy.
Epic: means a long poem written in a specific metre. Iliad is an epic. Really long poem wirtten with a
specific metre that revolves around some momentus thing (like a quest). LOTR is considered an epic.
Lyric: was a genre in which the poet would actually recite poetry with their back to the audience.
Regularily done. Narrator generally speaks in 1st person. Tend to be more flowery.
Drama: characters do all the talking.
Iliad is an epic. It can also be thought of as a tragedy.
Homer has a deeply pervasive impact on the development of the arts and culture in 5th century greece.
Homer's realism:
details- grey-eyed athena.
Lots of detail compared to adam in genesis.
Immortality: not of the soul.
Iliad- men grow, die, more are born, grow die, etc. Regenerative.
Honour is the recognition given to somebody in their lifetime.
Glory is your name living on after you die.
Glory is what you really want to achieve.
