Document Summary

A science dealing with the collection, analysis, interpretation & presentation of numerical data. A way of reasoning, along with tools and methods, designed to understand the world. Data values or observations are information collected regarding some subject. Often organized into a data table (example below) The rows of a data table correspond to individual cases about whom/which we record some characteristics: these cases may be: Experimental units (inanimate objects: the characteristics are called variables & are shown as the columns. Data tables are cumbersome for complex data sets, so often 2 or more separate data tables are linked together in a relational database. Each data table included in the database is a relation because it is about a specific set of cases with information about each of these cases for all the variables. Categorical/qualitative variable names categories and answers questions about how cases fall into those categories.
