Document Summary

The centralization and laxing of vowels to shwa [ stress. ] in syllables other than those with primary. Comes specifically from a me sound change a falling off of noun cases. Schwa = ipa as in sod a or sun. It is a mid-central, lax, and unrounded vowel: due to french after norman conquest, mode central vowel. A significant sound change- there are not too many instances of this sound in oe. One of two factors which caused leveling of inflections leading to their eventual loss. Effects of vowel reduction: the merger of unstressed a, o, and u with e and their subsequent reduction to [ ] (schwa: following this, there was the silencing of the final e"s and the loss of medial e"s (middle) Note that the levelling of inflections often demonstrates the effects of metathesis, which is the reversal or reordering of 2 sounds.
