Example: Merlot wine sales plummeted after a character in the movie Sideways snubbed red wine Term test 1 Feb 12: 15% Term test 2 March 19: 15% Essay Proposal: 5% Essay April 2: 30% Final Exam: 25% Participation and attendance: 10% Archetypes: - Recurring key components - A recurrent narrative design or pattern of action, character type, or image identifiable in a wide variety of works of literature, as well as in myths, dreams, and art works Jan 22 The Hobbit, formal features Fantasy - Consists of myth based tales, set entirely or in a part of a secondary world, somewhat familiar, featuring magic and or the super natural and addressing primarily archetypal figures, locations, and movement - Characterized by primary tone of wonder - Balance universal and specific - Texts arouses generic expectations - Layers of event, cause and effect - Plot - Character - Picaresque: Spanish for “picaro” a story which recounts the episodic escapades of a rascal who lives by his wits and wears a mask of false bravado - Hero: Talent of mischief refers to… - Motif - An object, phrase, or reference which repeats or recurs conspicuously within a text. In the Hobbit, the treasure of the goblins, smaug, the stone, and the ring, games (Gollum’s riddles), games of allegiance and loyalty, mountains, maps. - - Theme Secondary world Combination of real world and fantasy. Easier to connect to because you’re more familiar with on some level and the rest will fall into place. Symbol: - Anything that symbolizes something. Includes an object, event, image, word, or person which in turn signifies something else and has a range of references or meanings beyond itself. Some symbols become cultural convention. “The cross” (faith, church, etc.). Other symbols are created or re-invented artistically. The central image in William Blake’s “The sick rose” is a classic example of poetic symbolism. Enstrangement Effects: - Techniques which introduce an aesthetic distance from a scene or event or through which the author controls a reader’s egree of detachment or involvement with a central character. In each case the familiar is made to seem strange, and disconnected with the reader’s extratextual reality Fantasy – formal definition Features: Quest; Hero - Motif, theme, symbol, - Tone: Wonder - Effects: engagement, enstrangement January 29 Motif Theme Archetype Magic - Knowledge (beyond - Wise woman (witch) human) - Magic - Wisdom - Object - Power - What is hidden or kept - Control a secret - The unknown - Mystery Secondary World A fictional location or story setting common to fantasy, science fiction, and other fictions which takes place in an imaginative realm Language - Runes - Elven - Kenning Kenning A poetic used in Anglo-Saxon poetry from the oral bardic tradition; the use of a descriptive phrase in place of the ordinary name for something. Some kennings describe picturesque features (like “sword storm”) while others are functions or roles (poetic (like “ring giver”) The Cultural Function of Fantasy Fantasy is a profoundly optimistic genre that works hard, though its imaginative renderings to transmute the dark and evil working of men into a beam of light, wonder, and hope Feb 5 Dracula A cruel and savage path where the privileged view fed on everyone else Gothic - Originally an adjective derived from the word goth, the name of an ancient and savage Germanic tribe in literature the term “Gothic” has been applied to fictions characterized by a gloomy setting, violent or grotesque action, image of decay, degeneration, and Decadence, and a tone of moral panic.
