ES101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Abiotic Component
Document Summary
Will examine in more detail how both the biological and physical components of the environment will limit or enhance the pattern of organisms. Abiotic: makes up biosphere, consists of nonliving components such as water, air nutrients. Biotic : consists of biological components ( animals, plants and microbes) Another way of expressing the controls on a species distribution is to determine which components are important to a species" existence. Establishing these needs is determining the range of tolerance of a species. Based on differences in genetic makeup some individuals within a species or population may be able to have slightly different tolerance for many factors. Law of tolerance: the existence and distribution of a species in an ecosystem are determined by whether the levels of one or more physical or chemical factors fall within the range tolerated by that species. Eg. most organisms are least tolerant during reproduction and juvenile stages of life.
