ES101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Autoimmune Disease, Interspecific Competition, Chemical Warfare
Document Summary
Competition: for shared or scarce resources such as food. Reduced by species migrating, shifting feeding habits. Resource partitioning: when species compete for scarce resource, they evolve more specialized traits that allows them to use resource at diff time, in diff ways. Studied by robert mcarthur: 5 diff species that use spruce tree. Plays role in evolution and natural selection. Often kill the sick and weak, giving better access to resources and prevents excess population growth. Sharks help remove sick ocean animals and learn how to fight canner and immune system disorder. Carnivores: ambush, stalk and pursue, may use chemical warfare. Prey: some have protective shells, camouflage, use chemicals to repel poison (irritate, foul smell) Batesian mimicry: looking like a foul tasting species. Parasitism: when one species feeds on part of another organism, by living on or in the host. Brood parasites: have little contact with host, ex. Mutualism: 2 species interact in a way that benefits both.
