GG231 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Mount St. Helens, Banff National Park, Mount Garibaldi
Document Summary
Module 1: risks and disasters arising via geological. Volcanoes have fascinated humans since recorded time - the unleashing of immense power, the sudden destruction and long-lasting disturbance and benefits of the eruption have both attracted and frightened those who live near these mountains. Americans, this is the most recent, deadly volcanic disaster on this continent. When studying the hazards of a volcano, it is necessary to determine the type of volcano as this often dictates the type of eruption and energy release. Not all volcanoes exhibit the type of deadly explosion that occurred with mount st. helens. A variety of types of blasts and material released range from the slow flow of lava to ash and rock sent many thousands of metres into the atmosphere. In general, the material explosively released during volcanic activity is called tephra. It is the extent, speed, composition and volume of material that determines the level of hazard of the event.
