Cartography
Week 9, Lecture 1: Thematic Mapping
Attribute tables hold variables that enable us to map spatial patterns in a layer’s geographic
distribution
o Resultants maps= thematic/quantities/statistical maps because they use numerical
attributes of features
**4 Basic Types of Thematic Maps:
o Choropleth= graduated colour map
o Dot= dot density map
o Graduated Symbol
o Chart Map
Raw data of real world NOT suitable for direct mapping, choosing Thematic Mapping Technique
requires careful consideration of numerical properties.
1. Exploration of Attribute Data
2. Levels of Measurement and Symbol Types
3. Data Standardization
4. Matching of Map Type to Spatial Data
5. Data Classification
1. EXPLORATION OF ATTRIBUTE DATA
Involves attribute table and understanding it
Examine spatial units, variables, distribution, tendency, dispersion, and shape,
2. LEVELS OF MEASUREMENT AND SYMBOL TYPES
