Discussing how appearance is what people take notice of first, creating a divide, and stereotype based on the person's appearance/race • Cultural lens is how we 'see' race • Laws and practices that affect opportunities is 'race' forced upon people • Immigrants needed to find a 'spot' in society, into a race o Often working toughest jobs o 'inferior' races working these jobs o Slums developed and viewed as ugly side of development- visually and class tension • Charles Davenport expressed fears of racial invasion, the population of USA with increase of immigrants people will become darker in pigment, crime will increase, insanity in population will increase (He was against increase of immigrants and classified these separate races to lower the quality of society and majority race already present in the United States • Many argued new European immigrants were in a transitional sector of society- not viewed as 'FULL
