GG102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Map Projection, Robinson Projection, Conformal Map
Document Summary
One crucial aspect of map making is which projection to choose. Obviously, this transfer brings with it distortions of the earth"s curvature that have an impact on what the map looks like. In turn, the appearance of the map influences how we perceive the importance and validity of what is being mapped. It is important to be aware of distortions and appreciate how they can influence or mislead map readers. Maps can only show one undistorted property of the globe. These properties are: area/size, shape, distance, and direction. The compromise projection distorts all four properties but only to a moderate degree (e. g. the. Robinson projection) and is useful for political maps which show different countries. Finally, our perspective can be influenced by where the world is centred. Europe in the centre while others place the americas in the centre. Now you are ready to progress to module 2. Make sure you read chapter 2 first, though!
