Document Summary

Calgary 2013 most expensive disaster in cdn history: still rebuilding floodplain of bow river. Fluvial studies examine the movement of water and sediment through the river system or watershed and the processes of erosion, transport and deposition of material. Terms: runoff, watershed or catchment, gradient, headwaters, base level, stream or total load. Don"t need to know how to calculate equation but need to know relationship between 3 terms: discharge and flow = expressed in hydrograph (stream"s flood potential) Hydrograph with very steep peak indicates rainfall or runoff travels through system very quickly and could suggest potential for a flash flood. Very long and flattened slope could indicate a slow buildup of streamflow. Types of floods: flash floods: rapidly and without warning. Occur where river channel has a strong channelized flow. Account for most flood-related deaths since they are highly unpredictable and little warning.
