Document Summary

Field instructors:, stacey van opstel, alex maclean, felix nwaishi, jennifer hickman, There are two main objectives of the field hydrology lab. The first is to become familiar with different ways and means of measuring flow in streams and rivers. This involves comparing various methods that we will employ in the field. Measuring stream velocity is a necessary step in determining the volume of water flowing within a stream or river. Measuring the flow in a river system is an essential step in understanding how the land system it is draining is responding to precipitation intensity/type/pattern, land use changes, and impact of farming practices such as irrigation. Plotting the measured discharge against incoming precipitation assists in quantifying probabilities of water levels within the river system and thus flooding potential. To understand anything about the movement of water within the landscape we must be able to define a unit of that landscape that we can quantify.
