Document Summary

Gs102 - lecture 4 - the globalization of human reproduction. Kinds of social relationships that come from the human experience of mating, birth, and nurturance. Globalization: transnational adoption, domestic workers (nannies), transnational surrogacy. Surrogate is the biological mother; her egg is fertilized by the father"s sperm. Embryo (through ivf) is implanted in the surrogate"s uterus. Ex ivf (test tube babies); icsi (intracytoplasmic sperm injection); artificial insemination; sex selection. Low costs (you could try 3 times for the same cost of 1 try in another country) No regulation (until 2013 when surrogacy visas introduced, and 2016 when transnational surrogacy banned) To hererosexual couples who prove they cannot have children naturally. Surrogate must be of the same religion, unmarried, yet having already given birth to a child (but not via c-section) Make a note of the different kinds of people, roles, technologies that make commercial surrogacy in the film possible.
