GS201 September 18 , 2012 Liberalism - Family of ideas that views the world through prisms of individual liberty (ideology) o Try to understand the world with alternative vision o Principles – moral equality of persons (we make our choices we know what we want)  Core values  Toleration (worthy of equal respect and dignity) o Ie. Core principles in Western world:  Pursuit of happiness  Freedom  Justice o Looks at the world through lens of individual o Explains the world paying attention to individual o Individual Liberty – strives for focus - Moral Equality o We have reason, capable of directing their lives, respect and dignity - Toleration o Freedom of individuals to live diverse moral lives shouldn’t be interfered with o Non-interference in the lives/ activities of others o Especially if what someone else is doing in their lifestyle is effecting your freedom o Limit to toleration: forcefulness = not being tolerated any more o Accept diverse lifestyles o Government will have no control in religion (before Europe was not tolerable) – origins of toleration o John Locke said religion should be left alone o Liberalism= autonomy, choose how
