Global Studies Week 11: Sustainability People need to have an income; mainstream development is about economic growth Sustainability in Context  Rise of sustainable development parallel to rise of neoliberalism on world stage  Main question of sustainable development= preserve natural environment while allowing humans to pursue and improve the standards of living  Development policies based on economic growth since modernization have increased standards of living and life expectancy  ODA, and other specific programs have worked to increase literacy, health etc. in some countries But…  Have created tons of environmental problems o Deforestation o Depleted fisheries o Dwindling clean water supplies o Industrial pollution  Environment is degrading because of human action Some see globalization and continues economic development as a solution to environmental problem
