French revolution was violent so was the Russian and Chinese
revolutions. Hence, violent revolutions are part of modernization. We
also see violence in the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq and with 9/11.
There are sort of like creative destruction- destruction to try and create
something more utopic out of it.
The invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq destabilized the area and hence there was a
power vacuum. This was one of the ways that the global war of terrorism led to the
creation of ISIS.
Difficult predicament- we know it. There is a shared logic on either side- the Jihadis and
the ones who are part of combatting it through the GWAT. There is kind of an absolutism
logic. Bush and Jihadis both claimed that God is on their side. Both were governed by
the notion of creative destruction- they can destroy existing flawed order with a new
better order. Hence both sides are extreme- Jihadis who are extremists and terrorists,
and those who have waged war on terrorism through oppression.
What gives rise and produces the ends of barbaric antics we see ISIS using like
beheading and burning people they're captured?
one reason for US to use coercion tactics was that they wanted to shame the prisoners
by stripping the conservative arabs and muslims naked. They wanted to dehumanize
them and make them seem more vulnerable so they confess or give information.
ISIS and jihadists come out of a context where they have already been dehumanized.
Some pictures released of the Abu Ghraib prison.
The dehumanization we see by the ISIS and other jihadists is being replicated by other
states in the GWAT.
states say that they don't condone these policies and don't endorse them or even
practice them regularly. they say that its simply rogue soldiers who take up these tactics.
we have to be aware of the erosion of civil liberties that is taking place in out own
societies. governments are asking us to compromise our freedoms to keep us safe.

There is a shared logic on either side- the jihadis and the ones who are part of combatting it through the gwat. Bush and jihadis both claimed that god is on their side. Both were governed by the notion of creative destruction- they can destroy existing awed order with a new better order. Hence both sides are extreme- jihadis who are extremists and terrorists, and those who have waged war on terrorism through oppression.
