Document Summary

Orend argues the us did not need un approval to go to war against afghanistan after 9/11, though he also argues that launching into war, even in response to an attack, is unjust. Guantanamo bay prison is a violation of geneva convention. Taliban agreed to turn over members of al-qaeda to a neutral third party the us was hungry for revenge & to restore its national honour. The creation of al-qaeda & the taliban are blowbacks of the cold war. May 2003, us & britain launch preemptive attacks against iraq, overthrowing & eventual execution of saddam hussein (25 year dictatorship). Weapons of mass destruction have never been found in iraq. The preemptive launch was done under false information. The us initially sought un security council approval, but withdrew the request bc they believed they were still validated from the gulf war in 1991.
