HI109 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: European Economic Community, Warsaw Pact, Berlin Wall
Document Summary
The government in hungary was back under the control of hardliners but they faced 2 problems. 1. there was a movement inside the party itself that was pushing for liberal af rms, imre nagy was in charge. Nagy makes 3 promises, free elections, pull hungary out of the war-saw pact, and to tell the soviets they don"t want their troops in the country anymore and to please leave. On the 4th of november the soviets invade hungary. Tanks, battles and soviet forces killed 3 thousand hungarians and 300,000 went to austria. The hardliners were returned to power and nagy was executed. Two lessons that are taken away from the soviet invasion. West was not willing to go to war over one satellite state. The other countries in eastern europe, the bad ole days are back, things get kept the way they were. Countries were still learning gradually how to cooperate with each other.
