The Long Twilight: Europe Before The Great War 1900-1914
What Europe? How were the borders defined? When and why?
- The questions that this raises
Dynamics of Europe:
Germany is a new power. What do old powers not like? New powers. They could
destabilize Europe; shift the balance of power
Jarauscht’s text focuses on modernity
‘Europe’ Greek mythology- setting of the sun? Pasture land?
- It is clear that the Greeks deemed it negatively because they could not conquer it-the
Alps would not allow for it- it was easier for them to sail the Mediterranean and not
climb+weather
- Stereotypic view of people who talk with their hands- they had to trade with people
who didn’t speak their own language therefore they had to gesture
Europe is small and northern. How could they conquer the rest of the world?
If you are in the north, you want to sail, you must construct stronger ships to face the
rough waters.
In the south it is much more fragmented. It is hard to have just one identity.
- This type of identity started in the south and migrated north.
Geography is related to culture
In a short period Europe becomes experts in killing and their killing becomes mobile.
Modernity and Society of Europe
How do we make sense of all the people in Europe?
- We will follow Jarausch’s (Out of Ashes) organizing principle
1. European society was becoming a modern society by 1900
2. The course of the 20th C Europe will engage in three variants of Modernization:
Nazi’s, Communism and Liberalism.
