Patterns of World History Volume 1
Lecture 1
• The word the world refers to the age of man, or heavens and mankind
• The world images such as maps
• World images are how we envision the world
• We should see maps as historical and geographical contexts
• Maps and what the world looks like has been influenced by western Europe
• Maps + history
• We divide the world in continents
• Ancient Europeans made Europe on all their maps much larger to make them look
better
Mercator Projection:
• Gerardus Mercator
• His maps of the world were shown as the most accurate map
• His map is a few random counties
• His map was western centralized view of the world
• All the geat iilizatios ae afte the th paallel ecept Europe
• The 40 parallel is where the Mercator projection starts going off track
World map (1922):
• The map is now split where Europe is off to the side and the Americas are the middle of
the world
• This map shows who the map was made by because it makes the Americas seem so
much greater than they are
• To understand the world, to understand history of the world we need to face the world
as it is
• Histoias ae alas tig to da shap lies etee outies ad otiets...ut
why?
• Because of language, religion and culture
• People moved greatly throughout the world
• Mogolia as ipotat ut fo hatee easo people dot stud thei histo ee
though they greatly influenced the world history
• Every civilization viewed their country as the middle of the world
• China literally means the centre of the kingdom aka the middle of the world
• Muslims, Buddhist and other religions all made maps based off their religions and their
gods, so for example wherever their religion was formed was always the centre of the
world
• Horizontal integration and vertical integration
• It shows and helps people understand how to look at history

• Problems with doing horizontal integration: doest oe sigifiae, had to
patterns, different civilizations were developed at diffeet ties so ou at see
elatioships foed, at see he soethig stated o eded pefetl
• Poles ith etial itegatio: had to deteie sigifiat eets ad hat ist.
• Problem of periodization: BC and AD (anno domini)
• Problems with periodization: vastly European approach, because of Christianity every
1000 years they expected something awesome to happen, but what happens with other
countries with different numbers?
• Discovering patterns is what historians do
• age of divergence and age of convergence, before year 1000 was dominated by
divergence and after the age of convergence
• They developed their cultures and language systems in the age of divergence
• But somewhere in the year 1000 this rise of empires, and people forming groups of
religion, language and common interests then it was the age of convergence
• A thousad eas ago thee as , to , laguages i use, ut toda its ,-
7,000. Linguists expect more languages to die by the end of the 21st century
• Studying world history is more than studying just the major events, or the interaction
between countries
• DO NOT GENERALIZE (you miss stuff in between)
• The bigger events are the outside of the cup but the stuff we really want to see is the
stuff inside
• Learning about world history is honouring the people who have died

Lecture 2: Humans, Origins, Evolution
• Where we came from; evolution and human origins
• Relate to early humans, as humans as the same as us
• The night sky: Makes you think of how the big the universe really is and how much we
still dot ko aout eighouig plaets
• Early humans spent a lot of time looking at the night sky
• Fundamental questions: where are we, why are we here, why?
• Hua osiousess oes i a stea, its eid to thik that our conscious can die
one day
• Ma people dot eliee i life afte death, sie the egiig of hua iilizatio
and early religion, humans believe in life after death
• At the very highest level of reality, there is a nice place where you can rest after you
have left the real world
• Humans have constructed narratives of the world and how we came to be
• They varieties over time and across culture
• 350 years they decided that the first day was:
• Sunday October 23, 4004BC
• We separated from apes 647 million years ago
• Many religions never thought that the world is really that old and that humans really
lasted that long
• Chistias eliee that a sigle god eated the old ad hua kid, plats ad
animals
• In Hinduism: they believe that the world is only millions of years old not billions
• The Buddhists saw the world as existing forever
• The buddha told his followers that the world is just a spec of dust in this huge galaxy
• “oe ultues didt eliee i a eato god
• Daoist cosmology (Chinese religion didt eliee i a god, the eliee that the old
just started to exist (look at slide)
• The tue a is oe ho has ee eoe sepaated fo the Geat Oeess
• People were so shocked that humans came from apes (think of an uproar)
• 13.6 billion years ago is when the world became a planet
• Aka the big bang!!!
• Cells made up the first forms on earth
• Chemical actions lead to cells
• Asteroid that hit the golf of Mexico that whipped out 90% of all the dinosaurs
• Human evolution was such a dangerous idea to have because of religion
• crazy to think we came from monkeys
