Impact of society on sport at the turn of the 19th century. Mid to late 1800s sport is sporacic conided in urban areas: lack of transportaion. Social clubs formed around leisure sports and development of large organizaions. Transportaion limitaions: slow modernizaion, lack of infrastructure. Considering these issues, if sports is leisure acivity it is not a primary concern having to carry everything with you (food, materials, shelter) First model t-1908: middle-class families can"t aford vehicles unil 1920s. Rail service- available but expensive in north america not europe. Sport was considered as play : localized, large scaled was limited. Physical acivity existed within certain socialized structures: schools, social clubs, lacked the bodies waning to engage in organized sport, seen as a secondary to physical acivity because it was more used for social. Organizaion in the era of play: upper class organize sports as athlete games. Without naional governing bodies: hegemonic amateurism in britain.
