Session 22: The Hillside Festival, Taking sustainability seriously

34-year-old grassroots organization inspired by musicians and environmental activists

What is Hillside
o Island on Guelph lake, conservation area
o Run performers by boat to the location
o Reduce the number of performers, have tracks play twice and block booking with
other festivals so the artist is already in the area
o Equipment, transportation of equipment backline: supplied standard sets of
istruets so artist do’t hae to rig the theseles, aoid haig ad
vans everywhere
o Island is a metaphor of the word, finite and we need to take care of it
o Dishwashing station
Do’t allo “tyrofoa ups or disposale
Wash 65000 dishes
o Water
Provide clean water from a tanker, banning plastic water bottles
Now they have a water wagon, series of taps and lowered down so its
more accessible
Saved 300,000 bottles from landfill and recycling
o Transportation
Used bio fuel vehicle and hand carts to save on emmisions of fossil fuels
Encourage cycling
o Garbage
Not like most festivals in the normal amount of garbage made (B+H)
