KP211 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Hard Copy, Roller Derby, Microsociology
Document Summary
Your task as interpretive sociologists, is to watch/observe the behaviours of those in attendance at the event who are there as spectators. You are to do this without interacting with those whom you are observing, and also, without making it obvious what you are doing at the event. As you observe the event make notes (field notes) about what you see the spectators (your subjects) doing while they watch the event. Microsociology involves the sociologist being able to paint a detailed and accurate picture of what he/she/they saw using words rather than a paint brush. The best microsociology presents a clear and rich description of an event/the people being observed. In the process of observing the behaviour of those being watched you should also look for and make note of recurring patterns of behaviour among those you are observing.
