Structural-functional view: what is race/ethnicity and what is its role in society, how does race/ethnicity in uence the social institution of sport and vice versa. What does the data say: journal article methods and ndings, operationalizing discrimination. What is race: physical di erences between human populations, historically linked to skin colour and geography, progressivism: racial hierarchy and social darwinism. What is ethnicity: shared cultural aspects: language, religion, traditions, not necessarily tied to physical aspects. Minority groups: groups who received di erential and unequal treatment due to physical or cultural characteristics. Some societies are structured around discrimination: ie. slavery.
