Risk factors for developing complications when you are diabetic: Hypertension = all related to the blood vessels. History (diabetes is one of the oldest disorders) Water tasters (no way of diagnosing diabetes, sweet urine) Langerhans (was a german medical student = found cells) Branting (doctor in canada- first one to recognize insulin transporting glucose into the cells) Insulin is responsible for transporting blood glucose into cells to be used. Took out dog"s pancreas and saw what it did. Called the autoimmune type (destroys langerhans cells) heath cells. Pancreas does not make insulin, or makes too little. Pancreas produces insulin, but does not produce enough or the body cannot use it effectively.
