[2] competing theories: classical theory (max weber) As societies have evolved from cavemen and gatherers today, we have become bigger groups of people and more complex. Humans had to figure out ways so that we had decision-making authority and others had less amounts. Government creating laws, giving people power to enforce the laws. Weber says we figured out the best way to deal with complexity is to create a kind of structure bureaucracy: clean, neat, cut and dry, vs. Maybe we need to think more about what we are getting ourselves into before we default to the bureaucracy. Classical theory: max weber, belief that there is one single best way for organizations to be structured, he goes back to the time of hunters and gatherers and moves forward beyond that. Bureaucracy to modern day: most organizations are structured this way [bureaucratic] Retail stores/shops [general mgr"s, mgr"s, general workers] Wlu [president, vice presidents, associate vice presidents, etc. ]
