It is important to understand which stage you are in now so you can choose appropriate
strategies for progressing through the cycle of change

6 months before thinking about changing
Doesn’t think anything will change
Contemplation
Person has the intention to change target behaviour within 6 months
Probably take action soon
Preparation
Person plans to take action within a month or is already taking small steps to
change behaviour
Action
Person is already making changes to behaviour which requires time and energy
Maintenance
Person has maintained new, healthier lifestyle for at least 6 months
Termination
The new behaviour is adopted
Never a linear model, it is a spiral model due to the ups and downs (moving behaviour)
Some people don’t go through all the stages and jump to quick changes
