Document Summary

Prisoners in a cave, sitting on a bench, cannot turn their heads, watching shadows all their lives that they believe is the real world. Plato"s statement - it is as if every society is in a movie theatre. Today: our only access to the real is through mass media/through shadows of the real. Making their way out of the cave - metaphor for gaining knowledge. Once your eyes adjust, eventually you can look at the sun - euphoric state. Person forced back into the cave, experience it all backwards tells the others about his experience, was killed. Moral: what the person coming back should do, is forget all they learned while they were away. Just become the best person at reading the shadows. The bast possible state is when everyone in that society is diluted into thinking that everything is okay. The goal of culture is to preserve the illusion of social stability and circumvent social unrest.
