Compliance with law deterrence and its alternatives. Obeying the law; going along with it. You want to deter people from breaking the law. Severity: severity of the punishment should be the strongest deterrent. Towards liigaion: hard to prove if tort liigaion is good or not o. Proacive measures: crime stoppers; intenion is to prevent a certain behaviour in the irst place. Behavioural decision theory: geing out of jail early. Idea of displacement, or shiting the problem. If the law is not seen to be legiimate, people will not comply with the law. Rob ford (the topic just cannot be avoided) Admission of guilt (use of illegal substances) and yet no charges (and changes may be unlikely) The number of variables and the ability (inability) to scieniically test the impact. Yet assering that a law has paricular efects is one thing. Demonstraing that it, in fact, has these consequences and explaining why they have occurred is quite another. (p. 84)
