Soundscape: the distinctive settings, sounds, and significances of a musical culture. Music of a soundscape is performed in places with which the sound then becomes associated. Concists not only of series of musical events but also the time and place within which the events take place and to which they lend both form and significance. Setting: includes venue to the behaviour of those present. The setting determines to a great extent what we will see and hear. Musical event is influenced by others that have come before it, whether performers are part of traidition or are trying out a new style for the first time. How performers adapt based on number of people and equipment present. Appreciating music means learning to hear it in a way that is appropriate to its soundscape. Four cross cultural acoustic characteristics: quality, pitch, duration, and intensity.
