MU194 Lecture Notes - Lecture 15: Shallow Breathing, Rib Cage, Clavicle
Document Summary
The ribs that poke out are called floating ribs. As breath comes in the thorax moves out. As breath goes out the thorax/ribs move in. On the way in clavicular is actively moving. When breath is on way out clavicular is passive and relies on gravity. Can be controlled without defying gravity if one wishes. Stomach and diaphragm don"t require as much protection as heart and lungs. For some people it may move up and for others it may move down when the air goes out. Guts get pushed up as diaphragm pushes down. Both muscles work against each other to aid in controlled singing. When breath is on its way out the abdomen is active. This differs from clavicular breathing because the clavicle is inactive when the breath is on its way out. Breath in is passive because all that needs to be done is relax muscles and air will fill. The breath takes itself on the way in.
