Opinion on whether nafta is beneficial or not varies by person analyzing it. Auto pact evolved into nafta- recognized market conditions and influence of asia. A deal was penned in october of 1987 and it became a very controversial election issue in 1988. Mulroney and the conservatives won despite the fears that canadian jobs would be lost and. Canadian culture would become too americanized despite assurances from the government. The us-canada free trade agreement (us-cfta) came into effect on january 1st, 1989.
